In Upper East, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has placed a ban on the use of motorbikes in Bawku and its environs.
Earlier on, REGSEC placed a ban on pillion riding saying a man picking another man or a woman picking a man on a motorbike is prohibited and that exemption was given to a woman picking another woman on a motorbike.
The violence resulted in a curfew being placed on the entire township a ban on smock wearing and later on a ban on pillion riding.
“The tensions in Bawku can be connected to the December 2021 confusion where there was gunfire in some parts of the town after an attempt in performing the final funeral rites of a Chief who died about 41 years ago”
Currently, the council has come out with another directive banning the use of motorbikes themselves. The council said in a statement that that is a result of the security situation and its violative nature.
“It is also instructive to note that this ban does not include motor tricycles. The ban affects both sexes,” the statement indicated
