A Call For The Resignation Of KNUST’s Director Of Students Affairs

A group calling itself the Concerned Alumni Association of KNUST (CAAK) has issued out a statement asking for the resignation of Prof. Wilson Agyei Agyare the Director of Students Affairs.

The statement issued by the CAAK reads:

Recently, there have been reports in the media space that the SRC President of KNUST Micheal Adofo Abuah and the Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Anokye Kyeremanteng allegedly embezzled an amount to the tune of GHC 9,100.00 after failing to embark on an Educational trip to South Africa. This came as a result of leaked documents addressed to the above-mentioned gentleman to refund the amount stated by a deadline, without fail.

In a subsequent notice released by the University Relations Officer on 5th August 2012, it was indicated that the two student leaders and the Financial Secretary presented themselves before an Audit team to examine pieces of evidence and statements from them. The outcome of the audit report per the URO’s release suggested that the President and Speaker were asked to refund GHC 6,700.00 instead of the earlier reported GHC 9,100.00. The outcome has left it in doubt why the Directorate of Students Affairs in a letter authored by the Deputy Director will be quick to ask the two SRC leaders to refund that amount. Why has the Auditor’s report not been published on the school’s notice boards? What led to the reduction of the amount to be refunded?

Another leaked document into the media space showed that the President had been served a notice to step aside pending investigations into the alleged misconduct.

The Concerned Alumni Association of KNUST is by this release questioning the credibility of the Directorate of Students Affairs, particularly the Director, Prof. Wilson Agyei Agyae for;

1. Leaking confidential letters addressed to the SRC President and the Speaker of Parliament.

2. Approving a huge sum of money as the Chief spending officer of the Consolidated Accounts of Students Associations.

We, the concerned alumni association of KNUST, condemn the leakage of the letter into the media space. This we believe is a clear act of defamation and an attempt by the Directorate of Students Affairs to repress and violate the student’s rights. Our checks reveal that this is not the first time the Office has leaked confidential documents as a reference can be made to a Ghana Web publication which revealed that an issue concerning a student over his alleged involvement in a hostel fraud in 2020 was swiftly leaked and published in an online news portal managed by a local radio station in Kumasi.

We also want to call for an independent audit into the Consolidated Accounts of students Association as we believe there are a lot of concerns surrounding the Consolidated Account managed by the Directorate of Students Affairs.

Finally, the Director of Students Affairs has lost the trust of the students to handle that office. The Director together with his has deployed machiavellian tactics to subvert the right and freedom of student leaders. He has demonstrated that he has lost control over the Office and with immediate effect, we are asking the Vice Chancellor to investigate allegations levelled against the Office and respectfully call for Prof. Wilson Agyei Agyare of the 1991 Year Group to resign as Director of Students Affairs and allow the competent and accessible Deputy Director, Prof. Otchere Addai Mensah to take over until all allegations levelled against him are cleared.
