Burial Date Of The Late JJ Rawlings Declared

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued out a letter which states when and how the burial of the late Jerry John Rawlings will done.

Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings died on 12 November 2020 at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, a week after having been admitted for a “short term illness” in Ghana. According to some reports, his death was caused by COVID-19. His death came nearly two months after that of his mother, Victoria Agbotui, on 24 September 2020.

President Nana Akufo-Addo declared a seven-day period of mourning in his honor and flags flown at half-mast. His family members appealed to the Government of Ghana to bury him in Keta in the Volta Region.

A schedule for the signing of the Book of Condolence was opened in his memory. His funeral, originally planned for 23 December 2020, was postponed at the request of his family, and now a new date for his burial has been provided.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued out a letter which states when and how the burial of the late Jerry John Rawlings will be done. The letter issued out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Regional Integration of Ghana reads:

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Reginal Integration of the Republic of Ghana presents its compliments to all Diplomatic and Honorary Consulates accredited to the Republic of Ghana and with reference to the former’s Nole Verbale No. PR/CIR dated 16th December 2020, informing of the postponement of the funeral arrangements for the late Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, Former President if the Republic of Ghana, has the honour to inform of the new dates for the funeral and burial rites of the late former president as follows.

* Laying-In-State from 24th to 26th January, 2021 at the Foyer of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) from 9:00am to 5:00pm daily.

* Mass on 26th January, 2021 from 9:00am to 11:00am at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Accra.

* Burial Service on 27th January 2021 from 9:00am to 11:00am at the Independence Square, Accra.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the Republic of Ghana avails itself of this opportunity to renew to all Diplomatic Missions, International Organisations and Honorary Consulates accredited to the Republic of Ghana the assurance of its highest consideration.
