In Austria, a surgeon after amputating the wrong leg of a patient earlier this year was fined.
The patient, an elderly person got his right leg amputated instead of the left.
The mistake was identified two days after the surgery took place.
The 43 old year surgeon was found guilty of gross negligence and fined her with an amount of €2700 in Linz court.
The widow of the patient who died before the case went to court, has been awarded €5,000 for damages.
Reports from earlier this year May stated that the patient attended the clinic in Freistadt, where his wrong limb was marked for amputation.
Identification of the mistake took place during a routine change of bandage and the patient was told to have his other leg amputated in addition.
The hospital said the occurrence is a “result of a sequence of unfortunate circumstances”. A public apology was made at a news conference.
The surgeon when asked why the right leg was marked instead of the left replied ” I just don’t know”.
In respect to this incident, she has moved to another clinic and half of her fine is on halt.
