The National Democratic Party Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi a strong advocate against the controversial e-levy has once again raised concerns about the e-levy.
He said ” The first reason why we are against the e-levy is that it is deception, this was not what we were promised. The second reason why we are against the e-levy is that it is theft. You must understand that it is not a tax, it is theft. We have a tax regime as a country”
“In Ghana, there are five forms of tax, there is income tax, corporate organizations pay company income tax on their profit, individuals pay personal income tax on their wages and salary. We have VAT which is an expenditure tax you pay as you spend, consumption tax. Excise duty imposed on goods imported”
“In Ghana, under our tax regime, we do not tax savings, we do not tax. capital or investment, we do not tax withdrawals. But the e-levy if approve will be imposed on savings and capital. It will be imposed even on nontaxable funds”
“If you get paid your salary, that money will have already be taxed and if you withdrew that money and decides to save it in your mobile money(momo) account, the government says they will charge you 1.75% on savings”
“Ridiculous! again if I want to invest in a business you do not tax on capital rather the profit. For every transfer you do through momo account, the bank account will be taxed”
He continued “Even if you go to the bank to withdraw money or decides to withdraw from momo account, the tax will be paid because it is an electronic transaction”
