hops in Accra’s Kantamanto market have been destroyed by fire, destroying goods and property worth thousands of cedis.
The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, November 29, 2022, destroyed several market structures.
According to reports, firefighters were seen battling the fire despite running out of water.
Because the firefighters had run out of water, affected traders were captured carrying headpans of water in an attempt to douse the fire themselves.
The Ghana National Fire Service is receiving operational assistance from the police as they work to put out a fire that has engulfed a section of Accra’s Kantamanto market.
The police have cordoned off the affected area to allow fire officers to perform their duties without interference. Officers have been deployed to prevent potential looting and to direct people and vehicles away from the incident scene. The exercise is also supported by officials from the National Disaster Management Organization.
Hon. Ambrose Dery, Minister of the Interior, is on the scene with the Inspector-General of Police to assess the extent of the damage and speak with affected traders. The Chief Fire Officer arrived on the scene as well and coordinated the entire exercise.
