Framework For Engaging Men And Boys On Gender Equality

The Department of Gender under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has held a Validation meeting on the Development of a National Framework and Toolkit for Engaging Men and Boys on Gender Equality in Accra.

In light of the above, the objectives for the validation meeting include:

– To develop a national Framework and Toolkit for uniformity in Engaging Men and Boys on Gender Equality by Stakeholder Institutions.

-To solicit inputs from all stakeholders to validate the draft Framework and Toolkit on Engaging Men and Boys in Gender Equality.

-To garner support and commitment from all stakeholders to utilize the Framework and Toolkit to engage Men and Boys on Gender Equality.

-To develop a national Framework and Toolkit that will be used by Stakeholders at the national, sub-national and community levels to engage Men and Boys.

-To ensure the meaningful participation of Men and Boys in Gender Equality.

In a keynote address delivered on behalf of the Deputy Minister/ Minister-Designate for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu (MP), the Director of Ghana Productive Safety Net Project, Mr Mawutor Ablo expressed their appreciation to the UNFPA for their support and the stakeholders for taking time off their busy schedules to join such an important meeting.

According to him, the quest for gender equality has seen women and girls leading the charge. Still, it is time to expose men and boys to the role they have to play in achieving the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment agenda.

“We cannot leave the men behind, they are indeed the integral part of attaining gender equitable and sustainable development,” he added.

Mr Ablo emphasized that achieving gender equality means transforming unequal power relations between men and women. Thus challenging notions of masculinity and traditional perceptions of manhood.

He is of the belief that drafting the National Framework and Toolkit for Engaging Men and Boys is a feat to be achieved.

The Director, therefore, called on the stakeholders to add their inputs, comments and suggestions to draft a concrete framework for engaging men and boys to achieve the set objectives.

In a statement read on behalf of the Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr Afisah Zakariah, the Deputy Director for the Department of Gender, Madam Vera Karikari Bediako said the Government of Ghana through the Ministry has made study progress in mainstreaming gender into all spheres of socio-economic development though gender inequalities persist, hence needs to be addressed.

Madam Karikari noted that achieving Gender Equality is recognized as a societal responsibility and should require partnerships between men and women.

She urged all to get on board and engage Men and Boys on Gender Equality as well as Women and Girls’ Empowerment.

The UNFPA Country Representative, Mr Barnabas Yisa congratulated the Ministry and the Department of Gender for bringing together National Institutions and CSOs to deliberate on the major strategies for engaging Men and Boys on Gender Equality.

“Male engagement improves not only women and girls’ health and well-being but also the well-being of men and the society,” he stated.

He entreated all to increase the momentum in engaging Men, Boys and other relevant groups since Gender Equality cannot be attained without the involvement of all.

Present at the meeting was the Representative for the Deputy Minister/ Minister-Designate, Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu, the Director for Ghana Productive Safety Net Project, Mr Mawutor Ablo, the Representative for Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr Afisah Zakariah, the Country Representatives for UNFPA, Mr. Barnabas Yisa, CSO’s and Stakeholders from various Institutions.
