Israel says Biden threat to stop arms 'very disappointing

On Thursday, two senior Israeli officials chastised US President Joe Biden for implying that he would cut off some weaponry sales to Israel should it raid the densely populated Gaza city of Rafah.

Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, responded to Biden‘s warning on public radio, saying, “This is a difficult and very disappointing statement to hear from a president to whom we have been grateful since the beginning of the war.”

Israel has sent tanks and carried out “targeted raids” in the eastern parts of Rafah, disobeying international criticism.

Although Rafah, which is on the Egyptian border, is home to the final battalions of Hamas, it is also overflowing with displaced Palestinian people.

In his most severe warning to Israel since the beginning of the conflict, Biden told CNN, “If they go into Rafah, I’m not supplying the weapons that have been used… to deal with the cities.”
“Civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs,” Biden stated. “It’s just wrong.”

Biden’s remarks, according to Erdan, will be seen as “something that gives them hope to succeed” by Israel’s adversaries, Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.

“If Israel is restricted from entering an area as important and central as Rafah where there are thousands of terrorists, hostages and leaders of Hamas, how exactly are we supposed to achieve our goals?” said he.

“This isn’t a tool for defence. This has to do with certain offensive munitions. Ultimately, the State of Israel must take the actions it deems necessary to ensure the security of its citizens.”

Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s far-right Finance Minister, declared that his administration would continue working toward its objectives in Gaza in spite of the US threat.

“We will achieve complete victory in this war despite President Biden’s pushback and arms embargo,” he added in a press release.

“The conflict must go on until Hamas is completely destroyed and our hostages are returned home. This means taking full control of Rafah, and the sooner this is done, the better.”

Early on Thursday, AFP reporters reported intense shelling in Rafah. Later, the Israeli military claimed to be bombing “Hamas positions” further north in the centre of the Gaza Strip.

Israeli forces took control of Rafah’s Egyptian border gate on Tuesday. This crossing has been the major route for humanitarian supplies to reach the besieged Gaza.
