The Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF) in partnership with organizers of the 2023 Aboakyer Festival and the Winneba Sports College have launched this year’s edition of the Aboakyer Festival Race Competition on Wednesday at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The occasion will act as a prelude to this year’s Aboakyer festival, which takes place on the first Saturday in May.
The 90km race which is being held as part of festivities for the 2023 Aboakyer Festival is scheduled to take place on the 29th of April 2023. The competition would commence in Accra through the Efutu Township and end at Winneba. The Cyclists are expected to race a 6.8km distance in 3 laps with each team comprising three intermediate cyclists.
The launch’s Special Guest, Professor Peter Twumasi, Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), expressed his gratitude for Neenyi Ghartey VII’s attendance and he pointed out that one-day hunting sports will be added to the list of sports practised in Ghana because Aboakyer has persisted for a long time and requires skill, strength, and awareness to succeed.

Mr Shaaban Mohammed, General Secretary of the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF), expressed his joy that a race was held in Winneba while he was in office as the Secretary. He had yearned for one over the years.
He gave a schedule for the 90-kilometre event and revealed that the top cyclists will compete for three jerseys and magnificent rewards.
“The first cyclist will spot a sports College Jersey, the second will have the Visit to Winneba Jersey whiles the final cyclist in the last round will wear the Ultimate Aboakyer Jersey,” he said.
Neenyi Ghartey VII gave a brief history of the Aboakyer Festival and how the Asafo Companies were formed, as well as the reason they go into the bush to catch a live antelope for sacrifice to the deity.
According to him, Aboakyer Festival is an energetic event because attendees can be seen sprinting and jumping everywhere, and he is pleased that cycling will continue to be one of the festival’s featured sports.
