NDC backs Mahama's position on same-sex marriages - Sam George

Samuel Nartey George, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) supports the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, on LGBTQ+ matters.

Mr. Mahama, speaking at a breakfast meeting with the clergy in Koforidua on Wednesday, January 31, declared that his faith opposes same-sex marriages, emphasizing the natural order of creation.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, the outspoken MP indicated that any decision made by the party’s flagbearer regarding LGBTQ+ issues reflects the party’s stand on such issues.

The MP said that both past and current leadership of the party support the proponents of the anti-gay measure.

“The NDC constitution indicates that when we elect a flagbearer or president, he assumes control of the party. So, when the former president spoke today, he indicated that his opinions are personal. I believe that also reflects, to a considerable extent, the position of the party.”

“If I consider the behaviour of the party in Parliament and the direction that the Minority caucus, the NDC group, has received from the leadership of the party, from the time of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu [former Minority Leader] to Dr Ato Cassiel Forson [Minority Leader], I believe it is safe to assume that this is the position of the NDC on this matter,” he said.

He stated that the bill regarding the promotion of proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values, also known as the anti-gay bill, is currently at the 60% consideration stage.

The MP for Ningo-Prampram expressed hope that the bill would eventually be passed. “We are over 60% of the way through the consideration process. Hopefully, in the next two weeks of parliamentary work, we will be able to conclude consideration. The major work is currently underway, and I anticipate we will be finished in another two weeks.”

The bill, which seeks to outlaw LGBT activities, has aroused debate since its introduction in Parliament by Samuel George and other politicians.

Despite the Speaker’s assurance that the anti-gay measure would be passed before the house went for the Christmas break, the clause-by-clause revisions to the bill were not completed during the deliberation stage.
