The objective of the National Science & Maths Quiz is to promote the study of the sciences and mathematics, help students develop quick thinking and a probing and scientific mind about the everyday world around them while fostering healthy academic rivalry among senior high schools.
This year’s episode has started on an unusual note, contrasting the euphoria that normally encompassed the University of Ghana business school in past editions from member school audiences. For the first time since the inception of the prestigious national science and maths quiz, the show was held behind closed doors to ensure the COVID-19 protocols are being adhered to.
The first contest of the preliminary stage featured Ghanata Senior High School, Saint Mary’s Senior High School, and Saint Thomas Aquinas Senior High School all from the Greater Accra Region. In what seemed to be an exciting contest, the boys from Saint Thomas Aquinas came top with 22 points from the first round, followed keenly by the girls from Korle Gorno with 17 points and Ghanata trailing with 14 points.
It became a one-sided affair when Saint Thomas Aquinas answered almost every question in the second round known as the speed race to widen the gap. The contest ended with Aquinas amassing 65 points to be crowned winners of the contest.
Tipped to be one of the favorites to lift the trophy this year, we look forward to exciting performances from the lads from Cantonments!
