elé, the Brazilian footballer who became one of the world’s most famous athletes, died at the age of 82.
After learning that his colon cancer had worsened, family members gathered at the Albert Einstein Israelita Hospital in Sao Paulo shortly before Christmas and posted a series of pictures of their bedside vigil in recent days.
Pele’s daughter Kely Nascimento posted a photo on Instagram on Thursday of what appeared to be Pele’s family’s hands on his body in the hospital, with the caption: “We are grateful to you. We adore you infinitely. Rest in peace, my friend.”
Pele died at 3.27 pm local time (6.27 pm GMT) “due to the failure of multiple organs as a result of the progression of colon cancer,” according to the hospital.
As tributes poured in from around the world, the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) issued a simple “King Pele” tweet, accompanied by three crown emojis.
