Pope Francis has given his support for same-sex couples in a documentary directed by Evgeny Afineevsky.
According to the Pope same-sex couples must have “civil unions”.
In a documentary which was premiered on Wednesday, the Pope said, “Homosexual people have a right to be in a family. They are children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or made miserable over it. What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered.”
Some time ago when Pope Francis was an Archbishop of Buenos Aires he opposed same-sex marriages in law but l supported some legal protections for same-sex couples.
Aside from the Pope’s comments on civil unions, the documentary revealed him encouraging two gay men to go to church with their three children.
Way back in 2013, the Pope in the book On Heaven and Earth, said that legally equating same-sex relationships to heterosexual marriages would be “an anthropological regression”.
The Pope also disclosed that same-sex couples were allowed to adopt, “there could be affected children… every person needs a male father and a female mother that can help them shape their identity. If a person is gay and seeks God and has goodwill, who am I to judge?”
That same year, he hammered the Church’s position that homosexual acts were sin, but said homosexual orientation was not.
In 2014, Pope Francis reportedly expressed support for civil unions for same-sex partners in an interview, but the Holy See’s press office denied this.
Later in 2018, Pope Francis stated that he was “worried” about homosexuality in the clergy and that it was “a serious matter”.
