In order to address the problems with the country’s electricity supply, President Muhammadu Buhari announced on Tuesday that his administration is decentralizing the nation’s national grid through renewable mini-grids.
In an interview with Bloomberg News, Buhari stated as much, adding that his government had set aside 550 million dollars to install 20,000 Standalone Solar Systems (SHS) and Solar Hybrid mini-grids in more than 250 locations across the nation.
Following the collapse of the national grid, DAILY POST recalls that power outages had become a common occurrence in Nigeria for the previous few weeks.
The problem had also been exacerbated by an increase in diesel, an alternative energy source used by most households and production companies, which had led to an increase in goods and services.
The President stated that decentralizing the national grid through mini-grids powered by renewable energy is another strategy being used to address the national grid collapse.
More than 20,000 Standalone Solar Systems (SHS) and Solar Hybrid mini-grids have been installed as part of the 550 million dollar Nigeria Electrification Project in more than 250 locations.
The Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), a government-to-government initiative between the Governments of Nigeria and Germany, with Siemens AG, to upgrade the electricity grid with a 2 billion dollar investment, was mentioned by Buhari as one of the many ongoing projects and initiatives.

“The constitutional amendment bill recently passed through parliament will allow state governments to generate and transmit their own electricity, further facilitating investor participation in our market and enabling states and local businesses to transmit excess supply to the grid,” Buhari said. “Once signed into law, the constitutional amendment bill will allow states to generate and transmit their own electricity.”
