South Africans Await Election Results in Historic Polls

Voters in a historic election waited far into the night to cast their ballots, and the counting of ballots has begun, according to eNCA.

According to reports, this election will be the most hotly contested since apartheid ended in 1994. In the polls, almost 27 million individuals registered to vote, demonstrating the increasing division of politics following 30 years of democracy.

Not long after the polls closed, the counting process began at each voting station. In several locations, voter lines stretched late into the night as the counting started far later than the scheduled 9 p.m. shutdown.

Voters in South Africa chose nine provincial legislatures and a new parliament from among a total of 70 political parties and 11 independent candidates. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) issued statistics showing that over 27 million individuals were registered to vote, with women making up 55% of the electorate.

It’s unlikely that the outcome will be revealed before the weekend.
