South Africans head to the polls today in historic election

According to SABC News, South Africans are voting in what is expected to be the most hotly contested election since apartheid ended in 1994.

After 30 years of democracy, more than 27 million people are registered to vote in the polls, which shows increasing political division. There were more than 1.6 million applications for the special elections, which were held on Monday and yesterday.

As South Africans head to the polls, Minister of Police Bheki Cele has issued a warning against disruptive protests. Around the nation, at least 2,800 soldiers have been sent to high-crime areas to support law enforcement in upholding the rule of law.
