Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Hon Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey has urged corporate Ghana to support programs and activities earmarked for the 2023 UNESCO World Book Capital celebrations.

The AMA boss said this on Monday when the City of Accra formally took over as the 2023 World Book Capital of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) from the Mexican city of Guadalajara at an event organised in Accra.

The World Book Capital is an initiative of UNESCO adopted under the 31C/Resolution 29, in 2001, to recognise cities for promoting books and fostering reading for a year, and encourage a culture of reading starting April 24.

The Accra World Book Capital under the theme “Reading to connect minds for social transformation” is expected to equip vulnerable and marginal groups such as children, the youth and head porters (Kayayei) and persons living with disabilities with reading and creative writing.

President Akufo-Addo who officially launched the Accra World Book Capital said the title “has come to reignite the spirit of reading and its inherent transformative power to impact the Ghanaian society positively towards the national goal of Ghana becoming a learning nation.”
