TGMA 2024: Who Takes Home the Artiste of the Year Title?

All roads will lead to the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) Grand Arena on Saturday, June 1, 2024, for the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards. The program will honour singers whose songs and albums during the year in question have had a significant impact on the Ghanaian music scene.

For many years, the highly sought-after Artiste of the Year award has provoked heated debates about who ought to win. The nominees for Artist of the Year this year are Kuami Eugene, Stonebwoy, King Promise, Nacee, Sarkodie, and Black Sherif.

The Ghana Music Award board defines the Artiste of the Year as the Artiste(s) deemed most popular and appealing to the public in the reviewed year, as determined by the Academy, Board, and the general public. The artist or artists must be among the most nominated in the year in question, and they must have published a successful single, EP, or album.

With 15 nominations, Stonebwoy is the most nominated artist. He recently released a body of work titled “5th Dimension.” The album features the great Angelique Kidjo, who he worked with on the song “Manodzi.” It also includes the popular single “Into the Future.” He performed as the main act at multiple reggae festivals and at his own sold-out performance, the “Bhim Concert,” which took place at the Accra Sports Stadium, last year.

King Promise is the next person on the list. His big songs, “Terminator” and “Perfect Combi,” took over the radio. The songs saw a sold-out Asian tour after receiving a lot of airplay in Ghana and other nations. Two remixes of “Terminator” were produced: one including Nigerian producer and performer Young Jon, and the other featuring renowned Jamaican dancehall performer Sean Paul. King Promise released his second album, “5 Star,” before “Terminator.” Hit songs including “10 toes” and “Chop life,” featuring Nigerian musicians Omah Lay and Patoranking, respectively, as well as “Ring My Line” with Headie One, were produced by the album.

The sole gospel performer in the competition, Nacee, had a tremendous year because to her hit gospel song “Aseda,” which Ghanaians were singing along to on social media. The song was well-received by Ghanaians in the gospel community. Nacee secured four nominations this year.

Nacee is followed by Sarkodie, who is no stranger to the category. In response to his detractors and the difficulties that surfaced during his Jamz global tour last year, he produced the motivational tune “Otan.” After the rapper’s return from tour, “Otan” was released in late 2023. This year, Sarkodie was nominated in five different categories.

Next up comes this year’s Artiste of the Year winner, Black Sherif, who is nominated four times. Hit songs include “Soja,” “Oil in My Head,” “Paradise,” “Konongo Zongo,” and “Kweku the Traveller,” which peaked at number one on Nigeria’s top 100 Apple Music charts, helped make his name before his impressive first album “The Villain I Never Was.” He also served as the host of “Zaama Disco,” his own main program.

Following a strong run in 2019, Kwame Eugene, who won the coveted award in 2020, also published the “Love and Chaos” album, which featured the well-known songs “Monica,” “Fate,” and “Cryptocurrency.” This year, Kuami Eugene received nominations in seven distinct categories.

On social media, fans have begun to share their opinions about who should win the Artiste of the Year title. While some people think King Promise should have won, others have picked Stonebwoy as the winner. Still others are hopeful Nacee will become the second gospel musician to win the title, among other things.

Who wins 2024’s Artiste of the Year award is the key question here.
