The deal was completed on Wednesday after several months of negotiation after approval from the UK government that the former Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich will not receive any proceeds from the sale.
Roman’s 19-years of ownership comes to an end after he was forced to sell the club following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine on the 24th of February which led to his assets being frozen in the UK. His time at Chelsea would be deemed a successful one as they won an impressive total of 21 trophies: five Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, five FA Cups, three League cups, two Europa League trophies, one UEFA Super Cup, one FIFA Club World Cup and two Community Shields, while investing over £2bn on players and hiring 13 managers within that period.
In a statement on the Chelsea website Boehly said, “We are honoured to become the new custodians of Chelsea Football Club,” said Boehly. “We’re all in – 100% — every minute of every match. Our vision as owners is clear: we want to make the fans proud. Along with our commitment to developing the youth squad and acquiring the best talent, our plan of action is to invest in the Club for the long-term and build on Chelsea’s remarkable history of success.”
This commitment is seen as it is reported they intend to make a £1.75bn investment into the club to make the total takeover value £4.25bn
He also stated: “I personally want to thank ministers and officials in the British government, and the Premier League, for all their work in making this happen.”
The takeover is in conjunction with the California investment firm Clearlake Capital which will be the majority shareholding. A statement on the club website indicated that Boehly and Clearlake will “share joint control and equal governance of the club”, while “Boehly will serve as chairman of the holding company”.
