Violence at EC Office: Hawa Koomson’s son Injured in NDC-NPP Clash

There was an incident at the Kasoa headquarters of the Electoral Commission that left four people injured. One of the impacted individuals was sent to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for additional care due to the severity of his injuries.

Around five in the morning, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) engaged in violent altercations as a result of their disagreement.

Witnesses said that voters from opposing parties argued about the voting transfer line-up which led to the altercation.

Ato Koomson, the son of MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, was stabbed in the chest during the altercation and was subsequently transported to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for treatment.

Three other NDC supporters were hurt as well, and they are being treated at the Kasoa Polyclinic in addition to Ato Koomson.
We learned that there was a misunderstanding regarding the seating arrangement at the centre at approximately 4:30. When we arrived, we saw that the problem was getting worse. A member from the NDC opposed Ato Koomson’s attempts to keep the peace and chose to attack him instead of Ato Koomson, the son of MP Hawa Koomson.

The Awutu Senya East NDC Communication Bureau denounced the event and charged the NPP with inciting the violence in a statement.

The statement further claimed that the violent altercations were started by Ato Koomson, the son of the sitting member, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

“We are keeping a careful eye on how the police are handling the situation. We are concerned about the police’s choice to detain NDC leader Daniel Techie Mensah.

A piece of the statement said, “This action seems selective and raises questions about the impartiality of the police. The statement is from the constituency organizer.”

Regarding the violent altercations, police have detained two persons, among them the NDC’s constituency organizer.
