WhatsApp account takeovers: cyber security authority records 187 Cases

According to the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), more and more Ghanaians are becoming victims of social engineering and giving hostile actors their WhatsApp verification numbers.

According to a statement, this has resulted in roughly 187 cases being reported since 2023.

“Malicious actors pose as well-known people or as powerful personalities (usually as administrators of groups that the final victim is a member of). To get their targets to reveal their verification codes, they construct convincing messages.

Typically, these take the form of sending out text messages to actors informing them of current platform updates for their groups and providing URLs in WhatsApp groups with instructions to click on them to update their data.

The bad actors then assume the victims’ identities and trick their connections. According to the statement, “malicious actors occasionally carry out Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Swap fraud, in which they pose as the intended victim to a mobile network provider and obtain a new SIM card.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Bankers Association detained four people in 2022 for taking GHC 200,000 from victims in one such SIM Swap scam instance.
